I BELIEVE

Sam sat sweating… the weather was hot and made worse in the damp confined room in which he was kept. There was a small window with thick wrought irons criss-crossed so many times and welded in place to serve as a burglar proof. The only way for him to open the window was through a…

VIBES

Now, she was one of those ladies who is far more attractive naked than clothed. Not all ladies are, but she was indeed blessed. She had a body to die for, and each private moment spent with her leaves my heart thumping and my head spinning. No way could I resist. No way at all….

DRAFTS

It was a silent night, eerily hot as I stepped on the front lawn of the house. I knocked and waited some seconds before entering his apartment. I knew he was in, because I was told he’s not left the house for two days now. He didn’t acknowledge my greetings and possibly didn’t mind my…

PEACE

I was reading a bestseller novel one fine evening in one of the Lecture Theatres when Peace walked in, surveyed the classroom and scanned faces. Immediately she saw me, her face lit up in smile. She walked to where I sat with some friends, not minding that it was an all boys’ caucus, or that…

THE NORTH OF US

The North of Nigeria is beautiful indeed, of good roads and infrastructure, of bustling life and several fun activities. The other side of the gloomy tunes are mostly played out in rural communities where I was born and have lived for most part of my life. A jewel in the Savannah, a beauty without comparison,…

SPLINTERED SHELL: for Catherine Agajimah

“Do you love me?” He asked “I do. But the society doesn’t. ” Beats me how every erotic relationship is mostly oiled and maintained on the ingredients of this four word question. He seemed perplexed at the enigmatic response to his question. “What do you really mean please?” I took a deep breath and diverted…

UNTITLED

As I lay in his arms, I felt safe and loved. For the first time I lived again, I could breathe again. sadly he sighed, and with a wane smile said, “I wish this moment will forever be ours, both for the taking, and for the keeping. I wake up everyday, but it’s you that…

THE ART OF POETRY PERFORMANCE BY BASH AMUNENI – WEEK 3

When performing, body and voice together become a two-fold instrument and a performance poet must learn to control and coordinate them perfectly to communicate the full meaning of a poem.

Most people speak adequately during general conversation. But , when performing a poem, it requires additional vocal flexibility and special control. The fact that you use your normal speaking voice every day and have done so since childhood is no guarantee that your voice is an adequate instrument for artistic re-creation.

THE ART OF POETRY PERFORMANCE by Bash Amuneni – Week 2

Two task confronts the performance poet: discovering the architecture of the work you have chosen to perform and discovering how it manifests its aesthetic foundation. Both of these tasks are essential because, as we consistently maintain, you can not perform what you do not know, do not even try it and you can not shape your rehearsal until you understand the shape of what you are rehearsing. Rehearsal is the blood of your performance. And this is not for those in love with quick fixes. The work must be done.

Art OF PERFORMANCE POETRY with Bash Amuneni – Week 1

“Communicating to an audience”…an audience may consist of one person or several thousand. No matter what the size or nature of the audience, your responsibilities as a performance poet remains the same. You should communicate as skillfully as possible, making intelligent use of every detail to achieve the organic whole.

PILLED PHALLUSES

I dey tell you, how can we not see poetry In crevices and cracks And moistures and dews And in the holeyness of man’s pilled phalluses Pleasured in leisures Seizures in fixtures But we lap it all up! There! I see her swaying away To the shameful ululations of our loudest indignant echoes Forever treasured…

MUSINGS

What Night Sky would steal from a star? The sun blotted by the shadows in Hades Where did we lost this hold? I am the Captain of this sinking ship Caressing each whirlpool and hurricane With ripped sails too high Burned by ropes too stringed I never saw land forever Even the stars lost to…

THIS IS…

“This isn’t good, it is not at all”. She complained frowning, her mouth pouting and nose wrinkled like she had picked up the scent of a predator yet to be seen and felt. He rose his head up from whatever was on his mind and looked at her. A sneer dancing just on the corner…

AM I REAL?

There’s that truth about you that you’ve been running away from all your life. It’s the only lie you confidently tell yourself that it doesn’t exist while every part of you knows it does – including your body and soul. It has been weighing you down and standing between your fantasy and reality and you…

POLITICAL NUMKPOUGH

…Right Hon. Akume Shagba was a man of political clout. He had little means and was in his early fifties. He was hugely built with bulging, probing eyes that lately, constantly looked pleadingly into the faces of his constituents. Begging for votes. His big, protruding stomach lent him the look of an important man. Such…

MEETING MOSES

In the early hours of the day. When the only sounds heard is the fluctuating sounds of vehicles travelling down the road, insects chirping, birdsongs calling and cocks crowing. Somewhere around four O’ clock, she sighed deeply and sat up on the bed suddenly, with the persistent fear clutching at the strings of her heart….

THE ANGER OF INJUSTICE; by Kamo Sende

Brothers and Sisters, 1. The times have been difficult and our generation has had a “bad” time making progress in a time where “progress” has been labeled too much an achievement and those who stand before us think of us too little for something so big. 2. Following the resolve of Moses Anyamikyegh yesterday and…

ALICE THROUGH WONDERLAND

My first glimpse of this little pretty lady didn’t as much as bothered me, but I knew it would anyhow, since we were bound to work together as colleagues. I watched amused at her naivety and shyness as she clumsily tried to fit in, and make an impression for a job much needed. You see,…

A SUNNY DAY

It’s a clear sunny day, good for strolling and watching birds flirt from tree to tree, good to quietly sit and watch a moving stream as the water glitters and glisten on pebbles and other bigger rocks with the water clearly flowing over aquatic plants. Indeed, it’s a really good day! Adams sits quietly, nursing…

Hard To Hold

HARD TO HOLD

Hold me till it’s cold
Open up to me like a rose
Do we bloom when we jump the broom?
Nothing notes our nurturing
I lose you continuously
In sadistic pleasure
I might not fill the feelings
Not to heat this flame
But wait for its sweet ashes
Through these dragonous breath
That began with Megan
Now again…
It’s the velvety satin feel
Which flows out of our soul’s grasp
Completes the circle
As our heads hung
Eyes glint
The elements of water and ice
Air and fire
Makes it difficult seen
This is indeed hard to hold

DIRECTOR’S CUT

DIRECTOR’S CUT! (The Nigerian Film Project) “Tape rolling… Cut! Cut! I say cut!” The Director screamed, obviously scowling, dissatisfaction clearly written over his face, the perspiration running down his face showed he was overworking but his spirit wasn’t broken driving this crew of very difficult but talented crew. The cast and crew don’t mind anymore,…
